The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has welcomed the recent ‘breakthrough’ in a joint report from Brexit negotiators from the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK) under which the rights of EU citizens in the UK will be protected and vice versa. A deal has been struck by both sides to bring the first phase of Brexit negotiations to an end.

UK and EU officials will meet this week for a European Council summit and need to provide official backing for the deal to allow the next phase of negotiations to begin.
EU citizens constitute a large proportion of the retail industry in the UK, and the BRC had warned of a workforce shortage if their rights were not protected, according to British media reports.
BRC hopes that consumers won’t face higher costs or delays from tariffs or onerous customs barriers, BRC’s Europe and international policy adviser William Bain said. (DS)
