The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to improve competence and productivity in the readymade garment (RMG) sector of Bangladesh.

As per the MoU, UNIDO would train BGMEA trainers, engineers and factory-level productivity officials. Moreover, under the agreement, a productivity improvement cell would be set up at the BGMEA headquarters in Dhaka.

Speaking on the occasion of signing the MoU, BGMEA vice president (Finance) Reaz Bin Mahmood said the agreement would help garment manufacturers in Bangladesh to optimize their productivity level, especially in the backdrop of increasing production costs and intense competition in global markets.

Mr. Mahmood said the selling price of apparel have not risen along with an increase in the production cost, which leaves no alternative but to enhance the capability of workers in order to maintain the sector’s competitiveness in the global market.

John T Smith, International Coordinator of Textile and Garments BEST (The Better Works and Standard Programme) of the UNIDO, said the organization is looking for a new horizon in Bangladesh’s apparel sector by increasing the production capability of workers.
