A Textile Technology Business Center (TTBC), the first of its kind in Bangladesh, has been inaugurated by Lilianne Ploumen, Minister for Trade and Development Cooperation of the Netherlands, at the Embassy of the Netherlands in Dhaka.

The TTBC has been set up by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), with support from the Embassy of the Netherlands and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

As a knowledge hub, one of the key roles of the TTBC, set up at the BGMEA Complex, Dhaka, will be to assist the textile industry in adopting resource efficiency measures including waste water and ground water management systems.

“The Netherlands aims to support the readymade garment industry of Bangladesh in becoming more sustainable and globally competitive. Bringing in cleaner production practices and technologies that significantly reduce water consumption and effluent, will make the sector more resource-efficient and more competitive,” said Netherlands Minister Lilianne Ploumen, according to a BGMEA statement.

“Launching the TTBC is an important step towards a sustainable garment industry,” said BGMEA vice president Md. Shahidullah Azim.

Kyle Kelhofer, country manager of IFC Bangladesh, said supporting the TTBC is aligned to IFC’s commitment to the Bangladesh textiles sector to improve its environment sustainability.

The TTBC, which will become functional from June 15, 2014, will collect and distribute information on cleaner production, occupational health safety, water, sanitation and hygiene and effluent treatment plants.

Gerben Sjoerd de Jong, Ambassador of the Netherlands in Bangladesh, Md. Moshiul Azam (Shajal) and Mr. Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, Directors of BGMEA were also present at the launching ceremony.
