Seeking to export products worth $ 12 bn over the next two years, Bangladesh's garment accessories and packaging manufacturers have sought policy support from the government to achieve its target.

“We have set an export target of $12bn by 2018 from accessories, which needs government policy support,” Rafez Alam Chowdhury, President of Bangladesh Garment Accessories and Packaging Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGAPMEA) told reporters in Dhaka ahead of the international tradeshows beginning tomorrow.

Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed is scheduled to inaugurate the seventh International Garments Accessories and Packaging Expo-2016 (GAPEXPO-2016) that will showcase the latest products and collections of RMG exporters and buying houses. Two other events -- Garmentech Bangladesh 2016 and Yarn and Fabric Sourcing Fair -- will also be held alongside GAPEXPO-2016 from January 13-16, Chowdhury said.

A total of 300 companies from 20 countries are participating in the mega event which will see on display garment accessories, packaging and related machinery including labels, zippers, tags, tapes, thread, ribbon, buttons, rivets, laces, hooks, transfer film, paper and ink along with related machinery.

“The expo will display latest machinery, fabrics and yarns and innovative accessories for the garment industry, where the buyers will get all the necessary goods under a roof,” said Chowdhury adding that more than 25,000 visitors from home and abroad were expected to attend the trade shows.

RMG machinery of top business firms from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, England, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be put5 on display at the show, he said describing the event as an opportunity to exchange experience and knowledge. (SH)
