Washington is reportedly positive about arriving at a solution to its ongoing trade dispute with China, but is yet to schedule a date for further talks while assessing Beijing's response to the latest round of tariffs. This follows a recent report by a top US newspaper that China has cancelled mid-level trade talks with the United States.

The newspaper reported that China has also cancelled a proposed visit to Washington by vice premier Liu He scheduled for next week.

The United States feels China, despite its protests, is quite conscious of US demands to halt what the former considers unfair trade practices. The two sides continue to remain in touch, global newswires reported.

China added $60 billion of US products to its import tariff list early this week in retaliation to US duties on $200 billion of Chinese goods that will be effective from September 24.

A senior unnamed White House official told reporters that the US administration's ultimate goal was not to separate the interlinked US and Chinese economies, but he said companies could choose to alter their supply chains if Beijing did not change course. (DS)
