Chittagong deputy commissioner (DC) Mesbah Uddin has assured newly elected office bearers of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association's (BGMEA) Chittagong chapter of his full cooperation in setting up readymade garment (RMG) village.

At a recent meeting with the newly elected BGMEA office bearers, the commissioner said he would help set up a garment village on government Khas land near Chittagong.

Moinuddin Ahmed, the newly elected first vice president of BGMEA, said that in the past Chittagong used to account for 40 35 per cent of Bangladesh's readymade garments export, which has now fallen down to mere 9 per cent.

The scarcity of land for setting up readymade garment units came out as the main reason pointed out by BGMEA leaders at the meeting.

Last year, BGMEA Chittagong arrived at a consensus on setting up a garment village on a proposed site in Kalurghat with over 12 acres of land, located several miles north of the port city of Chittagong.

With the proposed plan of setting up readymade garment village on the outskirts of Chittagong, the BGMEA leaders hope to achieve the readymade garments export target of $50 billion by 2021. (HO)
