AAFA comments on CPSC votes

American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) President and CEO Kevin M. Burke commented on a series of votes by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on the publication of a Federal Register Notice soliciting comments on PL 112-28 (formerly, H.R. 2715), the final ruling for Conditions and Requirements for Relying on Component Part Testing or Certification, and the final ruling on Testing and Labeling Pertaining to Product Certification.
“The U.S. apparel and footwear industry takes its product safety charge seriously, and our strong record of safety proves it.
“I applaud the affirmative vote that will open a window for comment and review of recent amendments to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act. AAFA will work with industry to provide a top-to-bottom review of these amendments and make recommendations that will help alleviate unnecessary third party testing burdens placed on companies as they continue making safe apparel and footwear.
“AAFA will continue to examine the final rules on component testing and testing certification to ensure the U.S. apparel and footwear industry is not overly burdened with unnecessary and redundant requirements.
“Our industry functions at its best when the rules are clear, concise, and fairly enforced. AAFA looks forward to continuing our work with the CPSC to help bring additional clarity to our product safety system to ensure that we continue to meet safety standards that protect our children.”
