The exports of readymade garments (RMG) from Bangladesh registered a modest growth of 4.6 percent year-on-year, during the first two months of the current Bangladeshi fiscal year that began on July 1, 2012.

During the two-month period, RMG exports from Bangladesh fetched US$ 3.996 billion, with woven garments contributing a share of US$ 1.99 billion and knitwear exports accounting for the remaining US$ 2.006 billion.

Experts attribute the modest growth in clothing exports to a rebound in apparel orders from the US, which offset the declining exports to EU.

Woven garment exports rose by 13.34 percent during the first two months of 2012-13 to US$ 1.99 billion, compared to exports worth US$ 1.75 billion achieved during the corresponding period of last fiscal.

However, knitwear exports declined by 2.67 percent year-on-year to US$ 2.006 billion during July-August 2012 period.

During the period under review, Bangladesh’s home textiles exports grew at 26.67 percent year-on-year to US$ 164.01 million, while exports of specialized textiles, including terry towels, declined by 8.37 percent year-on-year to US$ 22.65 million.

In recent months, Bangladesh’s clothing exports have received a major boost due to a shift in orders from China to the South Asian country.

Moreover, the Government of Bangladesh is putting in efforts to help garment manufacturers promote their products in new markets like Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and Japan.
