The garment manufacturing industry in Mexico created 5% more jobs and earned 3% more revenue in 2012 compared to the previous year, despite facing a fierce competition from Chinese clothing, Sergio Lopez de la Cerda, president of Cámara Nacional de la Industria del Vestido (CANAIVE or National Chamber of the Clothing Industry) has said.

Speaking on the sidelines of ExpoProducción - the only event in Mexico to bring together under one roof all sectors of the apparel, home textiles and technical textiles - held last week in Mexico City, CANAIVE president said the inflow of Chinese garments into Mexico through legal routes has grown by 20 percent in 2012, which puts pressure on domestic producers to invest in innovation and manufacturing of value-added garments to avoid loss-making.

For the 8,750 active apparel companies in Mexico, 2012 was a good year, he said, and projected the Mexican garment sector to grow at five percent in 2013.

He said Chinese clothing enjoys a 60 percent share in Mexican market, but there is hope for domestic apparel manufacturers as the Government is interested in job creation in the sector.
