Apparel exports from Peru declined by 17 percent year-on-year to US$ 509 million, during the first five months of the current year, according to the data released by the Association of Exporters (ADEX).

ADEX Garments Committee president Pedro Gamio said Peruvian apparel exports are likely to be around US$ 1.6 billion this year, similar to exports of US$ 1.602 billion achieved in 2012.

He said the recovery in the US economy would help Peruvian garment exports to grow, but 2013 exports are unlikely to cross the 2008 figure of US$ 1.613 billion.

From January to May 2013, Peru’s clothing exports to Venezuela decreased by a sharp 45 percent year-on-year, while those to Brazil fell by 14.9 percent year-on-year.

Peru’s garment exports to the US, which continues to be the main destination, fell by 2 percent year-on-year, during the five-month period.

However, Peruvian woven apparel exports to Russia and Holland grew during the period, which shows the prospects of new markets.

Moreover, companies dealing in sportswear may find a good market in Brazil in view of the upcoming Soccer World Cup and Olympics, Mr. Gamio said.

He said the Peruvian companies are not producing large volumes for international buyers, but are producing smaller volumes for small and medium buyers. Although this generates growth, the total volume remains low, Mr. Gamio explained.
