Knit garments made from Eri silk launched

Silk is known as Queen of textile fibres because of it's luster and sheen. It is broadly divided as

a) Domestic Silk or Mulberry Silk.
b) Wild Silk.

The Wild Silk has three varieties namely a)Eri, b)Muga and C)Tassar. In that Eri is the staple fibre and the other two are filament. All these species rear only in forests. So they are known as Vanya Silks. The wild silks are the unique products of our motherland.

The Eri Silk worm pierces out from the cocoon and such cocoons are picked from the forests of North Eastern states, mainly, Assam. From these cocoons the staple fibre is scratched off and then it is spun into yarn. So it is a Silk variety obtained without killing the worm and hence proudly known as Ahimsa Silk.

Eri Silk is also known as Endi or Errandi, this Silk is produced by the worm Philosamia Ricini. These worms feed mainly on Castor and Kasseri's Eri cocoons are open ended, the yarn is spun. Interestingly, in many parts of the Northeast, Eri cocoons are produced for their edible pupae and Silk is the by - product.

Eri garments are quite popular because of their thermal and naturo medicinal properties. Eri has better moisture absorbency, strength and elongation than cotton and warmth like wool. These properties make this fibre more suitable for knit fabric development and hence into knitwear. These Eri knit garments are more suitable for both winter and summer season as casual wears.

In collaboration with Central Silk Board (Ministry of Textiles,Govt. of India), Bangalore and NIFT - TEA Knitwear Fashion Institute has undertaken a project to develop variety of knit fabric designs and knitwear products by using Eri Silk yarn.

From the Eri yarn knitted fabric structures like Jersey, Pique, Lacoste, Pearl, Twill, Fleece, Rib, Plated rib, auto stripes, jacquards were made. These fabrics are converted into no. of fashionable garments and displayed for the delegates during the launch at Tirupur.

For the introduction of these Eri knit garments a launch was jointly organised by Central Silk Board and NIFT - TEA on 19th December, 2008 at TEA Conference Hall by Mr.A.Sakthivel, President, Tirupur Exporter's Association.

About 120 Eri and Muga Knitwear Designs were exhibited. 100 of them were designed by the Apparel Fashion Design students of NIFT - TEA Knitwear Fashion Institute under the guidance of Mr.K.V.Kumar who is the Co - ordinator of this project and the remaining 20 garments were designed by Mr.Ashoka Chakravarthi of M/s.Swan Inc., Bangalore.

The launch was attended by 220 participants which is a mixture of Knitwear exporters, Academicians, Yarn sellers, Machinery dealers and students. After the launch of the product a musical fashion live display was performed by the NIFT - TEA student models wearing sheen fashionable Eri Silk Knit garments under the guidance of Ms.S.Vijayasri, Lecturer, GMT Department, NIFT - TEA
