Govt to lobby for zero duty access for garment exports to US

The Nepalese garment sector is going through a rough patch in the last few years, even before the economic crisis unfolded late last year. Exports from the garment are only going down hill with each passing year. The fall in garment exports is as much as 25 percent in the last fiscal (2007-08).

To arrest the fall, a delegation from the government is planning to visit the US to lobby support for providing zero duty access to apparels exported from Nepal. With the implementation of the free trade agreement in January 2005, exports of apparels from Nepal have started falling.

Prior to this period, the garment exporters had the advantage of the quota system which helped them export in good volumes to the US. From a peak of US $ 123.12 million in 2003, exports of apparels fell to $47.77 million in 2006.
