Although overall labour demand of enterprises in Ningbo city has declined due to slowdown in orders due to the global recession, though some enterprises that do have good orders in hand are facing a shortage of skilled workers.
At a recent job employment fair, it was amply clear that the shortage in the garment manufacturing sector in Ningbo city is as high as 1,500-2,000 workers, and most of this demand is for women workers, who are preferred for their deft stitching skills.
An official from Feiyun Textile and Garment Co., Ltd. in Ningbo said that his enterprise has already employed more than 200 female workers this year, but at the moment they still are short of 300 workers, considering the orders in hand.
The order position of Hua He Garment Co., Ltd. again from Ningbo city, is very good and has orders in hand to last till August end, but it is also hampered by a shortage of women workers and is unable to take any more new orders.
General Manager of Hua He, Wang Hai-Hua said, orders are still coming in, but profit margins have been squeezed, the only solution to which is improving labour productivity, which is possible through women workers only.
