The government of Cambodia has allocated US 7.6 million towards training and other assistance to the jobless workers who have been thrown out of their jobs in the garment as well as other industries, due to the global economic crisis.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Chhon said the need of the hour was to increase productivity in the industry and that the country was lagging far behind other countries, which was the leading cause of losing competitiveness in the global markets.

According to reports released by the Ministry of Labour, over 80 companies folded up in 2008, leaving over 52,000 workers jobless and the situation in the first quarter of 2009 is no better, aver experts from the garment industry.

The training period which will last for four months, will re-skill and enhance the ability of the workers in different fields other than those that they were working in, apart from providing them a stipend and other allowances during the course of the training.
