According to the TCF council of Fiji, an estimated 200 workers have been displaced from their jobs since the second month of 2009 and more than 2,000 workers are working on reduced working hours, the effects of the crisis.
Since they are not receiving firm commitments of buyers from New Zealand and Australia and a few have cut the flow of orders, the sector is working hard to uphold the flow of export business received of these countries, said the council.
Most of the garment units are struggling to keep units running all days of the week due to which they have resorted to cutting back working hours and put cap on new recruitments for the time being, they added by saying.
The council said that the feedback from the garment units on the outlook for next ten months was bleak and it would be wishful thinking to assume that it will not affect the local industry, since the crisis had already reached the doorsteps of the sector.
