Explore new markets for Bangladesh knitwear goods in Middle Eastern and African countries besides western nations, said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the business leaders of the country.

Bangladesh knitwear can have better business opportunities in countries like UAE, Bahrain, Jordan and in some African countries, informed Hasina while recounting her recent visit to Saudi Arabia.

The Prime Minister was speaking with a 26-membered delegation of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) at her office.

In the meeting she pointed that the focus of her government is always on the development of industries, trade and commerce as they are the key sources of country's economic growth.

The knitwear exporters demanded a 10 percent financial incentive against export performance. The total revenue generated from knitwear exports were US $5.533 billion in last fiscal year (July-June).

According to statistics revealed by BKMEA President, Fazlul Hoque, the knitwear exports of Bangladesh experienced a decline of 4.73 percent during October-December and fell by 2.56 percent in the month of February.

Hoque forecasted in the meeting that the knitwear exports would see a 15 percent decline in the three months from April. He urged an approval for the plots in Dhaka and Narayanganj for BKMEA's offices.

The BKMEA also asked for rescheduling of bank loans and reduction in bank interest rates for knitwear manufacturers as some production units have been closed and other some are surviving on marginal profits due to recession.

The knit manufacturers also demanded for a 'knit village' and support infrastructure development in the BSCIC industrial plots in Narayanganj.
