It is possible to revolutionise the textile industry without compromising on sustainability and safety
In a landscape where an estimated 80 per cent of membranes rely on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), Nibertex Pte Ltd is shaking the foundations with a trailblazing development. The company’s recently launched Nibertex, a C-0 DWR-based waterproof membrane, stands as a beacon of sustainability and performance, being 100 per cent free from PFAS and crafted using polymer nanofibers. Speaking to Fibre2Fashion, Nibertex Pte Ltd’s Founder Jae M. Park explains the electrospinning process and the significance of PFAS-based waterproof membranes for the textile industry.

How prevalent are PFAS-based waterproof membranes in the textile industry, and what challenges do they pose in terms of sustainability and safety?

PFAS-based waterproof membranes are pervasive in the textile industry. Their sustainability challenge lies in their environmental persistence and potential health effects. Transitioning away from PFAS is vital for a more sustainable future.

Are there any ongoing regulatory initiatives or industry standards aimed at reducing the use of PFAS in waterproof membranes?

Yes, regulatory bodies and industry groups are becoming more aware of the need to reduce PFAS use. They are encouraging the development and adoption of safer alternatives.

What alternative materials or technologies are emerging as potential substitutes for PFAS-based membranes in the textile industry?

Besides Nibertex, other technologies and materials are being developed as potential substitutes for PFAS-based membranes. However, none have so far matched the breathability and waterproofing performance of Nibertex, while being completely PFAS-free.

How do waterproof membranes, such as Nibertex, impact the overall performance and durability of textile products, and what benefits do they offer compared to traditional membranes?

Our waterproof membranes enhance the performance and durability of textile products by offering superior protection against the elements while providing exceptional breathability. This offers a level of comfort and protection that traditional membranes cannot match.

In terms of manufacturing processes and scalability, what advancements or innovations are being made to ensure the widespread adoption of eco-friendly and sustainable waterproof membranes in the textile industry?

We are constantly improving our manufacturing processes to enhance scalability and efficiency. Our patented electrospinning machine, less than half the size of traditional counterparts, is a testament to our commitment to innovation and adoption of sustainable membranes industry-wide.

What is the significance of Nibertex being 100 per cent PFAS-free in a market where the majority of membranes rely on PFAS?

The significance of Nibertex being 100 per cent PFAS-free is monumental. Most membranes in the market today are heavily reliant on PFAS, which are known to persist in the environment and have adverse health effects. By offering a PFAS-free alternative, we are providing the industry with an opportunity to transition towards more sustainable and safer materials.

Can you explain the electrospinning process and how it contributes to the superior quality and safety of Nibertex membranes?

Electrospinning is a versatile process that generates ultra-thin polymer fibres, or nanofibers. It allows us to create membranes with excellent mechanical properties, high breathability, and superior waterproofing. Moreover, our patented process enables the production of these high-quality membranes without resorting to harmful substances like PFAS.

What motivated you to invest three years of research and development into creating Nibertex?

Our motivation for investing three years of research and development was two-fold: the urgency to address PFAS contamination and the vast potential of electrospinning in textile applications, which until now, had been mainly confined to fields like filtration and biotechnology. Furthermore, we are a family run company with my brother. Patience is a key principle of our family.

How do nanofibers contribute to the unique physical and chemical properties of Nibertex membranes?

Nanofibers play a crucial role in Nibertex’s unique attributes. Their minuscule size allows us to create densely packed layers that prevent water penetration while enabling air flow, making our membranes both waterproof and breathable.

What are the environmental and health concerns associated with PFAS, and how does Nibertex address these concerns?

PFAS are associated with environmental pollution and a range of health issues, including hormone disruption and potential carcinogenicity. Nibertex confronts these concerns head-on by offering a PFAS-free alternative that does not compromise on performance.

Besides offering an alternative to PFAS-based products, what other contributions does Nibertex make towards a safer and more sustainable future for the textile industry?

Nibertex represents our commitment to fostering sustainability in the textile industry. We are exploring the use of biomass polymers, and are committed to developing a closed-loop solution with nylon and polyester to further reduce our environmental footprint.

Can you elaborate on your commitment to revolutionising the textile industry through safer and eco-friendly solutions?

Absolutely. We are dedicated to transforming the textile industry by prioritising safety, sustainability, and performance in our product offerings, Nibertex being our first groundbreaking step in that direction.

Will it be true to say that the launch of Nibertex has set a new industry benchmark? Why?

The launch of Nibertex does set a new industry benchmark. It shows that it is possible to deliver high-performance textile materials without relying on harmful substances like PFAS.

Can you provide insights into the future transformative innovations that we can expect from Niber Technology following the launch of Nibertex?

We are continually pushing the boundaries of nanofiber technology and exploring its potential in various applications. We are excited about our work with biomass polymers and the possibility of closing the loop with nylon and polyester.

What message would you like to convey to the textile industry and consumers about the potential impact of Nibertex and Niber Technology’s vision?

We want to send a message that it is possible to revolutionise the textile industry without compromising on sustainability and safety. Nibertex is just the beginning of our journey to making this vision a reality.
