May '09
J.D. Apparels, one of the biggest garment companies closed its shutter due to global economic crisis. The company had been exporting knitted fabric to leading business houses in the US.

About 1,277 workers of the company have lost their jobs due to the closure of garment company along with its washing, pasting and embroidery plants in Katahari VDC of Morang district.

Company management decided to shut the company down when GAP Inc, a leading garment company in the US, stopped sending new orders due to global economic downturn. This company had been placing orders with J.D. Apparel since the latter's inception.

The company was experiencing major decline in production since last three years on account of constant strikes and prolonged load shedding. During these three years, the company also had to lay-off many employees.

Mr. Bidur Pokharel, Manager, J.D. Apparels Garment, informed that they have asked for the permission from Department of Labour to shut the company down and retire 35 permanent employees, besides the staff.
