Garment exports from Wenzhou City have come out of the shadow of financial crisis as the exports realized a positive growth in the month of May, against the negative trends witnessed in the first four months of 2009.
From January to May this year, total export value reached US $410 million, a year-on-year increase of 4.4 percent, while national clothing exports declined by as much as 8.1 percent in the same period.
The current financial crisis has not yet bottomed out; but garment exports from Wenzhou have taken the lead to break through the depressing situation and could be a confidence booster for the rest of the clothing units in the country.
It is learnt that garment exports account for 10.6 percent of Wenzhou's total exports. Currently Wenzhou has 398 garment exporters, of which 102 export enterprises have exports of over US $1 million as of May this year.
But on back of the resurgence, some enterprises are finding it difficult to recruit skilled employees, as some of them had laid off workers when orders declined sharply in 2008. Now they have to recruit new workers and restart training courses.
Wenzhou Clothing enterprises have taken joint initiatives to go out and participate in exhibitions held in Hong Kong and other places, due to which results have improved with each initiative and they have been able to find new customers.
