Mason County Fiscal Court has been awarded a $17,136 Kentucky Homeland Security Grant to purchase turnout gear and other essential equipment for the Dover Volunteer Fire Department.

The outfits comprise protective firefighter outerwear, such as boots, pants, gloves and jackets to shield first responders when fighting fires, or managing chemical spills and other disasters.

“Even without adequate defensive clothing, Dover volunteers always responded to events, sometimes at great personal risks,” praised Thomas L. Preston, executive director of the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security. “This grant assures long-needed items.”

“Anything to help the Dover Volunteer Fire Department is very much appreciated,” said state Rep. Mitchel B. “Mike” Denham. “We thank Homeland Security for getting this grant because it is important for the firemen to have this gear.”

“I have a deep appreciation for volunteer fire departments for the sacrifices they make for the safety and well-being of others,” said state Sen. Charlie Borders. “Anything that can be done to enhance fire departments is something we should be sensitive to.”
