China remains top exporter of clothing to France

According to a recent report, clothing imports of France fell 3 percent year on year in first half of 2009, under the influence of shrinking consumer market. Nevertheless, apparel imports from the Asian region increased 9 percent.

China remained the top exporter of global clothing exports to France and realized a growth of 15 percent in the same period, year on year. Amongst market shares in the French market, India ranked at third place, with a growth of 5 percent.

Bangladesh came at fourth place with an astounding increase of 17 percent; that of Vietnam rose 7 percent; Indonesia gained 6 percent and that of Pakistan increased by 13 percent.

According to the report, France's textile exports continued to decline and fell by 24 percent in the first half of this year. Shipments to EU countries fell by 26 percent and that to Asian countries declined 26 percent, of which, exports to China fell 16 percent.

From among imports, textile imports fell 20 percent in the first half and textile imports from the EU countries which used to account for more than half of its total textile imports, has shrunk by 26 percent in the first half.

Italy is France's largest supplier of textile products, but imports from Italy fell 29 percent, while total textile exports to France from countries and regions outside the European Union declined by 9 percent.
