The textile and apparel export in Turkey is struggling very hard to counter the impact of the economic downturn in its global markets. Merter is one of those apparel manufacturing bases in Turkey which has witnessed a 30 percent fall in exports to its major markets.

Merter district which is located in Istanbul, exports most of its apparel goods to Russia, which is also reeling under the weight of the global recessionary trends and in order to overcome the slowdown in orders, apparel manufacturers of Merter are now looking for new markets.

These exporters are now eyeing the African markets as well as the lucrative Middle East markets by concentrating on Sudan and Iraq, along with which they are also focusing on branding and increasing variety to minimize effects of the contraction in global demand.

The clothing manufacturing companies are preparing to hold a apparel and fashion trade fair in Baghdad in February under the banner of the Merter Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (MESIAD) and will also send a delegation to Sudan to seek opportunities.

The aim of the exercise is to increase total exports to the two countries to US $3.5 billion by 2010 from the current level of nearly $2 billion. The Turkish textile and apparel sector is representing itself in Iraq for the first time.

Sudan is one more market which has not been explored till date and the demand from the womenfolk who wear dresses which requires up to five metres of fabric material sounds salivating for the fabric manufacturers of Turkey.
