The Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry intends to increase the overseas sales of textile and fashion products from around 690 billion yen, as recorded in 2009, to 800 billion yen within a span of three years.

To achieve this hike in exports, the ministry has proposed to take advantage of the increasing popularity of fashion garments of up-town areas like Shibuya and Harajuku in Tokyo to other Asian countries.

According to the ministry panel's estimates, annual exports of fashion garments in the future could probably touch one trillion yen.

Further, to generate more business opportunities, Tokyo's fashionable garments, which are popular amongst young Tokyoites, are being portrayed through fashion shows pan-Asia.

In addition to providing functional and financial support to small and medium-sized companies who are looking forward to expand in the international market, the panel's proposal also recommends establishment of a business centre in Shanghai.

To further increase overseas sales of fashion goods, the government intends to take advantage of the 'cool Japan' movement, wherein the latest Japanese cultures including music, films and television games are promoted on an international scale.
