We are not just crafting clothing; we are crafting a legacy
Gabbana epitomises the art of customisation. From the selection of premium fabrics to the intricate details of every suit, the men’s bespoke company crafts garments that are as unique as the individuals who wear them. In an interview with Fibre2Fashion, Business Head – Retail Vishal Shetty explains why their customers are delighted to wear the clothing made by their professional stylists.

What role does technology play in the modern bespoke industry, and how are bespoke tailors incorporating technological advancements into their craft?

The rise of technology in fashion plays a vital role in the modern bespoke industry. The integration of any technology in the industry does not mean replacing our time-honoured practices but rather step-up innovation. In essence, technology serves as a powerful tool that complements the artistry of bespoke tailoring. By integrating these advancements into our practices, we ensure that our clients receive not only the timeless elegance of bespoke garments but also a seamless and personalised experience that aligns with the expectations of the modern world.

What emerging trends do you foresee shaping the future of the bespoke clothing industry, and how might they impact the way bespoke garments are designed and produced?

As trends continue to evolve, they present both challenges and opportunities for any brand in the bespoke clothing industry. At present, artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a dominant trend. The industry is witnessing an increase in AI-based applications across various aspects of fashion, from design and manufacturing to customer service and virtual try-ons. Augmented reality (AR) is another key trend, offering a ‘try-before-you-buy’ experience that is becoming increasingly popular with younger consumers and the broader market. Despite the rapid development of generative AI technologies, such as ChatGPT and chatbots, they cannot replace the human touch and expertise that are integral to personalising garments. The unique experience and skills of our master tailors and craftsmen remain irreplaceable and continue to be a cornerstone of bespoke clothing, even amidst technological advancements.

Can you provide a brief overview of Gabbana and its mission, especially for those who may not be familiar with the brand?

Gabbana is where European couture meets India. It is where the finest fabrics meet exquisite designs and the delicate craft of tailoring. Since 1994, we aim to provide a top-notch bespoke experience to our valued clients. Our mission has been constant since the beginning and that is to provide our customers with a high-quality garment, that perfectly fits in their price range.

What sets Gabbana apart from other brands in the industry, and how do you ensure a unique value proposition for your customers?

At Gabbana, our customers are the cynosure of what we create. Our professional stylists and highly trained craftsmen skilfully craft clothes aiming to create something that they will be delighted to wear. We ensure that they are introduced to a varied range of products and fabrics, along with our expertise in high-quality bespoke tailoring, which we also provide them in the comfort of their homes.

With the evolving landscape of e-commerce, how does Gabbana adapt to emerging trends and technologies to enhance the online shopping experience for its customers?

At Gabbana, we are attentive and reckon to the needs of our customers, who are the core commitment of our brand. Thinking of them, we have an appointment booking system, wherein the meeting is booked to be scheduled at their home. They are provided with all the services in their comfort zone, right from fabrics and design to the final garment. Additionally, we are soon planning to launch an e-commerce platform to make their shopping easier.

How has the bespoke clothing industry evolved over the past decade, and what are the key factors driving these changes?

The bespoke clothing industry has significantly evolved over the past decade, primarily driven by changes in consumer preferences and the advent of digital technologies. The rise of the internet and social media has brought about globalisation, offering us global visibility and enhanced communication with customers worldwide. This digital expansion has also allowed us to present a broader range of fabric options to our clientele. The internet has not only educated us but also led to advancements in technology, fostering innovation and integrating new methods to streamline and expedite processes. Additionally, there is a growing trend towards digital transformation and sustainable practices. Despite these changes, Gabbana remains committed to the timeless art of tailoring, while adapting to and incorporating these innovations.

In the bespoke industry, how do customer expectations differ from those in the ready-to-wear market, and how do bespoke tailors adapt to meet these unique demands?

‘Bespoke’, the word itself means ‘to speak for, anything specially made for one person, speaking for them, their personality, individuality etc. Our customers are always closely involved, paying attention to every small detail from fabric pattern to the very last accessory they need in the garment. And our tailors adapt to meet these unique demands by prioritising personalised service, meticulous craftsmanship, and a commitment to creating one-of-a-kind garments that align with each customer’s individual style and preferences.

With growing concerns about sustainability and ethical practices, how is the bespoke industry addressing these issues in its sourcing and manufacturing processes?

The bespoke industry is increasingly adopting sustainable practices by being eco-friendly and implementing ethical manufacturing processes. Additionally, ethical practices are even becoming an integral part of the morals of many bespoke businesses. By continually assessing and improving our practices, we too aim to contribute towards a more sustainable and responsible future for the bespoke industry.

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the fashion industry. Can you share any initiatives or practices that Gabbana has implemented to minimise its environmental impact?

As a forward-thinking bespoke brand, we are conscious of the importance of sustainability and believe that the first step is to produce long-lasting, timeless, adaptable garments. We work with the very best suppliers which ensures that the supply chain is un-compromised as are our fair labour conditions.

How does Gabbana actively engage with its customer base, and how do you use customer feedback to drive product improvements and business decisions?

We value the insights and preferences of our customers and actively engage with them through various channels and incorporate their feedback into our design and business decisions. We strive to create bespoke garments that not only meet but exceed their expectations.

Your retail presence is currently limited to Mumbai. Do you have any plans for further expansion?
