The garment industry of Trinidad & Tobago, which offers employment to around 3,700 people, including, clothing designers, factory workers, sales and administrative staff, garnered $26.5 million as revenue during 2005-08, informed Carl Francis, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
He further said that, it is believed that the fashion industry has a great potential to earn bigger revenue. Fashion products such as textile design, customized tailoring for men and women, high-end fashion merchandise, resort wear collections, accessories design and manufacture of products such as, handbags, swimsuits and jewelry, are sure to enjoy a niche market with bulk market opportunities, informed Francis.
The international garment and fashion industry accounts for over US $100 billion, as per the figures revealed recently. So, small and developing economies like T&T have a number of opportunities in this sector, stated Francis.
The Ministry of Trade and Industry considers efforts of FWTT as a vital factor for offering T&T the key position in the regional apparel industry. Since, it offers business opportunities to T&T designers along with a displaying of their garment designs, added Francis.
