Fabric material shortage haunts clothing exporters

The owner of a garment factory employing more than 10,000 workers in Guangdong is burning with impatience these days. He recently received a 3-million pieces order for clothing from overseas market, but the factory lacks raw materials.

According to him, the order requires 60 tons of fabric materials, but fabric supply is very tight. The main reason being, restrictions on exports of yarn from Pakistan and India, due to which powerloom factories are running short of yarn.

Cotton prices too have risen by around 35-40 percent in the last few months. This has also led to an increase in prices of cotton yarn and in turn cotton fabrics. Prices of these commodities are increasing with each passing day.

Cotton price-weighted index stood at 17,323 on May 26 this year, up more than 35 percent over the same period last year, and about 15 percent higher compared with the beginning of the year. All these factors put together have created a shortage of fabric materials.
