RMG wage structure to be declared by July 28

A parliamentary body asked the Labour and Employment Ministry to announce an appropriate minimum wage structure for workers in the apparel industry, by July 28. Also, the parliamentary standing committee on labour and employment ministry recommended taking efforts to get rid of the issues in the clothing sector.

A tripartite meeting, comprising, the representatives of the Ministry, apparel owners and workers is expected to be organized soon, informed the Labour Minister to the committee in a meeting held at the Jatiya Sansad Bhaban. Ongoing unrest in the clothing industry will be the topic of discussion in the tripartite meeting, informed parliamentary body Chief, Israfil Alam in a press briefing.

During the parliamentary session, the Labour and Employment Minister, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain presented a bill, asking to increase public corporation labourers' service age to 60 years from the current age of 57. The parliamentary body asked the ministry to implement Labour Welfare Foundation Act.

Moreover, the body has also suggested to improve Technical Training Centre's activities. The current policy on road transports and labour union registration was also discussed by the committee during the meeting, along with the issue of toll collection under the name of various associations in the sector.

In order to find measures to curtail extortion in the sector, a three-member sub-committee was formed, which will also investigate the inconsistency in labour laws, stated a press note released by the parliament secretariat.

The committee has also asked the ministry, to make efforts to find new international labour market.
