The workers of a clothing manufacturing unit in Indonesia who toiled hard to produce replicas jerseys of various teams taking part in the football World Cup in the last few months, are up in arms against their owners, in a bid to have their salaries increased.
A major global sportswear brand had outsourced production of these jerseys to this unit, where the workers earn a pitiable US $121.5 per month, after working for 8-9 hours a day, six days in a week.
The workers are demanding doubling of their wages as cost of living has gone up in recent months. It may be recalled here that the Bangladeshi and Cambodian RMG sector is also facing ire of their workers over payment of low wages.
The Indonesian garment sector on the other hand is refuting the claims of the workers by saying that, they are adhering to the minimum wage norms stipulated by the government and they are doing no wrong.
