Despite being one of the biggest producers of cotton in the world, Pakistan has a miniscule share of the global textile and clothing trade.

This sentiment was echoed by the former Chairman of Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Associations (PRGEMA), Bilal Mulla.

He said that, it the Pakistan value-added textile industry was provided a level-playing field, it had the potential to grow manifold.

Quoting from a World Bank report he added by saying that, against a global apparel trade of US $361 billion, Pakistan's share amounted to just $3.9 billion per year.

Citing the example of Bangladesh, he said that a country which does not have any cotton production facilities, exported clothing totaling to more than $11 billion.

The main reasons being that the main the basic raw materials like cotton and yarn were being exported in large quantities, which led to a shortage in Pakistan.
