Government, for the existing financial year has set an export target of US $18.5 billion with a growth perspective of 14.2 percent, over the last fiscal year's export earnings.

Commerce Minister, Faruk Khan fixed this export target, while pursuing a meeting recently held at his office. Also, he was hopeful that as the world is now out of the effects of global economic crisis, the developed countries would hike their exports from Bangladesh.

During last quarter of 2009-10, there was a rise in exports and expressed optimism that exports may further get better as global crisis seems to have ended.

Also he stated that, the power and gas crisis have eased to a greater extent these days, and added that, this would help boost the production in factories and mills, thereby pushing the export volume.

Faruk, while speaking on the recent hike in the wages of the readymade garments (RMG) workers' said that, as the discord in RMG sector has eased, this would lead to augmented exports.

Exports of knitwear products have been targeted at $7.13 billion, woven garments $6.614 billion, jute and jute goods $1.115 billion, home textiles $563.5 million and leather $298 million, among many other exportable goods.

The country, during fiscal 2009-10, exported goods amounting to $16.20 billion, which is 4.11 percent above those recorded in the 2008-09 fiscal.
