Ghana to prohibit second-hand undergarments in its market

The Ghana Standards Board (GSB) will firmly impose the ban on import, distribution and sale of second-hand inner wears since February 2011, Kofi Nagetey, Director of the Inspectorate Division of the Board, recently stated.

The official revealed the above information while speaking in a meeting with dealers of second-hand garments. The meeting was held by the GSB and was a part of its literacy programme aimed at checking the imports and endorsement of second-hand inner wears at Takoradi.

Nagatey said that, the GSB would even take help of the security agencies to prevent these second-hand inner wears from entering the market.

GSB would inspect all the shipments of second-hand goods at several ports and entry points, before clearing them, he said. He further added that, any shipment found to be carrying any used undergarment would be seized and destroyed.

GSB is keeping a close watch on the markets and is also involving the stakeholders, mainly the dealers of second-hand products and Association of Importers to join them in their drive meant for bringing down the imports and clearance of used inner wears to the minimum, so as to avoid health hazards, Nagetey said.
