The United States will continue to impose additional import tariffs on Chinese products till a trade deal is reached with the country, according to President Donald Trump, who recently said his government is getting along with China very well and the deal is coming along nicely. Top US officials are in China this week to further discuss the deal.

“We’re not talking about removing them. We’re talking about leaving them for a substantial period of time, because we have to make sure that if we do the deal with China that China lives by the deal,” Trump told media representatives on the south lawns of the White House. US officials have been reportedly demanding profound changes to the Chinese industrial policy.

The two largest economies are locked in a trade war since March last year. Trump imposed tariff hikes of up to 25 per cent on $250 billion worth Chinese goods. In response, China imposed tit-for-tat tariffs on $110 billion worth US imports.

“Now, No president has ever done what I’ve done with China. China had a free reign over our country, taking out $500 billion a year for many years. We actually rebuilt China, in the truest sense of the word. We rebuilt China,” Trump added. (DS)
