In a letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, the Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) has requested her to mention four of its main demands in her memorandum which she would be submitting today during her meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The construction of an ESI hospital at Tirupur with all facilities is in top of the TEA's wish list. In its letter to Jayalalithaa, it said “the existing ESI centres in Tirupur are not equipped with required facilities for treatment.”

“It is a paramount importance to construct an ESI hospital in Tirupur with all facilities for giving treatment to all major diseases as of now, the workers have to travel to Coimbatore to get treatment.” it said.

The TEA also asked the CM to highlight the issue of including Tirupur in the next list of smart cities. This would help Tirupur increase exports and improve the city's quality of life.

The TEA underlined the city's importance saying the knitwear business contributes a total of Rs.33,000 crores per annum to the country's revenue, including Rs.23,050 crores from exports and Rs.10,000 crores from domestic sales and that too without having any comparative advantages like other counterpart cities mainly in infrastructure and other business facilities.

It also cited the Census 2011 to point out that Tirupur came first among 506 cities and towns in the country in providing employment. Out of a population of 8.78 lakh, 44 per cent (3.85 lakh) were employed in the knitwear and stakeholder units and the figure has gone up to 6 lakhs in 2015- 16.

Along with a smart city tag, the TEA also wants the Chief Minister to seek hostels for working women and labour quarters. At present, Tirupur knitwear and stakeholders sectors employs 3.5 lakh workers directly and out of this about 65 per cent of workers are women workers, mainly hailing from the rural background.

“As more number of women workers are employed by Tirupur industry, there is an urgent requirement for working women's hostels/labour quarters to provide facilities to the women workers,” it said in the letter to the CM.

The TEA also requested the Chief Minister to include the issue of the release of the 13th Finance Commission's grant of RS 200 crore for the completion of common effluent treatment plants also and seek PM's help to arrange for release of that amount.

Jayalaithaa had already made a representation to the PM to this effect during his visit to Chennai in August 2015. (SH)
