PVH Corp., one of the world’s largest apparel firms and owner of a series of brands, including CALVIN KLEIN, TOMMY HILFIGER, Van Heusen, Speedo1, Warner’s and IZOD, has been selected as one of two winners of the 2018 US Secretary of State’s Award for Corporate Excellence (ACE), which recognises US firms upholding high standards of responsible business conduct.

PVH received the award as a lead investor of a best-in-class apparel manufacturing facility in Hawassa, Ethiopia. The honour recognizes the company’s commitment to environment and the communities where it operates, according to a company press release.

“We are in a unique position to make positive impacts in the places around the world where we work and live. One of those places is Ethiopia, where we set out almost five years ago to create a sustainable, vertically integrated, apparel manufacturing industry,” said Emanuel Chirico, chairman and CEO, in a statement.

The Hawassa Industrial Park is expected to result in 60,000 jobs within a few years and features state-of-the-art machinery focused on environmentally-advanced practices. The park’s Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) effluent treatment facility recycles over 90 per cent of the wastewater produced in the park. This helps preserve Lake Hawassa, which serves as the community’s water supply and is the centre of the local ecosystem.

The award will be presented to Chirico at the annual ACE ceremony in Washington D.C. on October 5. (DS)
