The area under cotton sowing for 2016-17 crop year has decreased in north Indian states, especially Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, where cotton sowing is almost completed, according to media reports.

In Haryana, cotton are has declined 14 per cent to 5 lakh hectares in 2016-17 crop year compared to 5.8 lakh hectares last year, as per the latest data.

Similarly, in the neighbouring Punjab, area planted to cotton is lower by 43.11 per cent at 2.56 lakh hectares this year, as against 4.5 lakh hectare in 2015-16.

In Uttar Pradesh too, area under cotton cultivation has dipped 19 per cent to 0.17 lakh hectares compared to 0.21 hectares in the corresponding period of previous year.

Thus, the total area under cotton in these three states has fallen to 7.43 lakh hectares, a fall of 29 per cent over 10.51 lakh hectares of land under cotton in 2015-16.

The drop in area under cotton is mainly due to farmers shifting to other crops after incurring huge losses owing to whitefly pest attack last year.

In Rajasthan, another north Indian state, however, cotton sowing is in progress, and total acreage so far is higher by 43 per cent compared to the year-ago period. (RKS)
