In the latest report for September, USDA has forecast the 2016 cotton crop at 16.1 million bales, up 263,000 bales over the August estimate and nearly 3.3 million higher than the 2015 cotton crop. Total 2016 cotton planted acreage was raised 1 per cent in September, while the higher output forecast is the result of an increase in both area and yield.

The US government agricultural agency estimated planted area at 10.1 million acres, while harvested acreage was projected at nearly 9.7 million acres, up from 9.5 million acres forecast in August and abandonment in 2016 is expected near 5 percent, marginally down from the previous season.

The national yield is estimated at 802 pounds per harvested acre, 36 pounds above 2015 but below the five year average of 821 pounds. As a result, abandonment in 2016 is expected near 5 percent, slightly below a year ago. (AR)
