Sainsbury’s has created 15,000 new seasonal jobs this year, to meet increased demand from customers over the busy Christmas and New Year period and to provide an even better service.

The jobs are available with vacancies in over 1,000 of Sainsbury's stores across the country. It's anticipated that around 2,000 of these temporary roles will be made permanent, as new stores are opened and extended.

Gwyn Burr, Customer Service and Colleague Director, said: "Job creation is one of the most important contributions we make to the communities in which we serve, so this year we're happy to announce that we have created 15,000 seasonal jobs. Christmas is the busiest time of year in our stores, so the work is fast-paced, varied and rewarding.

"The number of permanent jobs created following the Christmas season is testament to the fact that Sainsbury's is a great place to work, with many opportunities on offer and the potential to learn a whole set of new skills. People can develop their career with us and progress relatively rapidly, to run a team, a department or a store. In fact, many of the colleagues who started with us at Christmas are now in charge of large teams and budgets, helping to drive sales and deliver great service."

Seasonal colleagues carry out a number of key roles including customer service, working on check-outs, helping keep shelves full and assisting the online delivery teams as they prepare Christmas shopping orders.

One of the successful candidates for a permanent job after a Christmas application is Emily Worf, 21, now a trainee team leader at the Sainsbury's store in South Woodford. Emily joined on a temporary contract last year, but applied for a permanent position in the New Year.

She said: "When I first started my temporary Christmas job with Sainsbury's last year I was pleased to get such a good, flexible job. When I found out that there was an opportunity to stay on I was straight on to my store manager as I really enjoyed being part of the team. I was successful in my application and started working on the customer service desk which I really enjoy - I find it so rewarding to help solve problems and make sure that customers leave our store happy. Christmas is such a busy time but it can be good fun too, so I'd recommend if anyone wants to get some great retail experience then Sainsbury's is the place to do it."

Sainsbury's has over 1,000 stores across the UK with 150,000 colleagues. In the past year, Sainsbury's has created 6,000 new jobs opportunities, as part of its 20by20 commitment to create 50,000 new jobs by the year 2020.
