After months of decline in growth the leather & footwear industry in Pakistan has made a smart recovery in its exports for the period July–November 2007.
Customs statistics show that a few items in the industry registered a growth while few degrowth. Exports in leather goods rose to US $254 million with a growth of nearly 3 percent.
Leather garments was the highest gainer with exports to the tune of $196 million gaining by nearly 17 percent over the same 5 month period of the last fiscal year. Exports of gloves registered degrowth by nearly 16 percent, while exporting to the tune of nearly $46 million.
A slew of incentives had been announced by the Government since the last 2 fiscals as leather was one of the main items in the baskets of exports from Pakistan. But the leather industry could not take advantage of the same by exporting more goods.
The industry was looking to receiving more sops from the government to increase the exports of the leather & footwear industry.
