Industry infrastructure requires integrated approach, Shri Nath

Addressing the Parliamentary Consultative Committee Meeting of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, here on Friday (15th February) evening on “Industrial Infrastructure Development”, Shri Kamal Nath, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, has said that “it will be our endeavour to fine tune our strategies and develop a more holistic and integrated approach towards the development of infrastructure for Industry.

He indicated that the government has taken several initiatives to provide a fillip to the development of industrial infrastructure. Some of these initiatives, particularly the Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Scheme (IIUS), can be seen as successful interventions.

Members who participated in the meeting were: S/Shri Sambasiva Rao; Ram Singh Kaswan; P. Karunakaran; Sudhangshu Seal; Rajeev Shukla; Sharad Joshi; Shantaram Naik, M. Rajasekara Murthi and Naresh Gujral. Dr. Ashwani Kumar, Minister of State for Industry, Shri Ajay Shankar, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion; and Shri G.K. Pillai, Commerce Secretary also attended the meeting.

While welcoming the Members Shri Kamal Nath explained that the primary responsibility for development of infrastructure vests with the State Government and State Industrial Development Corporations provide basic infrastructure to industrial units by setting up industrial estates in self-contained geographical areas.

Most State Governments have set up industrial estates and the experience so far has been mixed. The Central Government also supplements the efforts of the State Government through various schemes for the development of industrial infrastructure.
