Retail sales for durables grow by 3.1%

Turnover in total retail trade in May 2008 showed an increase of 1.3 percent compared with May 2007.

Compared with May 2007 retail sales for consumables (for example, department stores and specialised grocery stores) decreased by 1.0 percent.

Retail sales for durables (for example, clothing stores, stores for furniture, stores for second-hand goods, mail order houses) increased by 3.1 percent.

Seasonally adjusted, the monthly index figure for total retail trade is 115.5 (2005=100), which is an increase by 0.9 percent since April 2008. Compared with the previous three months (December – February), retail trade during the last three months (March – May) increased by 0.1 percent, seasonally adjusted.

Turnover in total retail trade in April 2008 rose 0.5 percent compared with April 2007. The monthly index figure for April, seasonally adjusted, is 114.5.

The figures refer to fixed prices, taking into account the number of shopping days. The comparisons refer to the corresponding period in the previous year, unless otherwise stated.
