Opportunities for Indian Leather industry in Ethiopia & Egypt

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) jointly with All India Skin & Hides Tanners and Merchants Association (AISHTMA) and Indian Finished Leather Manufacturers & Exporters Association (IFLMEA) organized an Indian leather industry delegation visit to Ethiopia and Egypt with an objective to building stronger ties through exploring and evaluating the opportunities for the leather industry in Ethiopia and Egypt.

Mr. Habib Hussain, Chairman CII National Committee on Leather and Leather Products and said that their visit achieved new relationships to create stronger ties with industry of Ethiopia and Egypt. He further said that Indian Leather industry recognizes that Ethiopia and Egypt would be important strategic partners to help India become a major global player in the leather sector.

H.E. Mr. Gurmeet Singh, Indian Ambassador in Ethiopia, welcomed the 19 member strong Indian delegation said that India and Ethiopia share a very strong relationship from old times and this could give the Indian industry an advantage over other nations.

He said Ethiopia provides a huge opportunity to Indian Leather industry as Ethiopia has good raw material and low labor costs. Indian industry needs to bring in the technology and capital.

The delegation also called on Ethiopian Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr. Girma Birri and Ethiopian State Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr. Tedesse Haile. Both Ministers invited Indian industry to invest in Ethiopia highlighting the favorable policies and incentives laid out by the Ethiopian government.

The delegation also met the Ethiopian Leather Industry Association (ELIA) members with whom CII had signed a Memorandum of Understanding earlier this year during the CII?s Africa Conclave to promote business opportunities in this sector. The delegation also visited various tanneries and shoe factory in and around Addis Ababa.

The members visited The Egyptian Leather association and a few tanneries during their visit to Egypt. B to B meeting was the focus for Egypt.

Mr. M Rafeeque Ahmed, President , AISHTMA expressed his appreciation for the tanneries in Ethiopia and Egypt, saying that their unique advantages and Indian competence could create new possibilities of individual companies either setting up manufacturing facilities or joint ventures in Ethiopia and to increase sourcing of leather from Egypt.

Dr. Zackaria Sait, President, IFLMEA said that this visit would pave the way for new relationships between Indian industry and leather sector of Ethiopia and Egypt.

The delegation had members from well known companies from leather sector like Farida Group, AV Thomas Group, K H Group, Orient Express, Tata International, R. Y. Gaitonde & Co. and many others.
