The World Fair Trade Day is celebrated each year, on the second Saturday of May to enhance the reach out of Fair Trade among all stakeholders of development. World Fair Trade Day was first celebrated in 2005.

World Fair Trade Day has so far proved to be effective in making the success of Fair Trade visible. Fair Trade organizations all over the world organize Campaigns, Awareness Programmes, Cultural Programmes and several other activities to speak out for Fair Trade & Sustainable Development.

In India, during the last four years, World Fair Trade Days were celebrated by highlighting several themes related to development such as “Fair Trade + Ecology,” “Kids Need Fair Trade,” "Fair Trade is Peace," "Small Change, Big Difference” etc.

Such efforts were very much helpful in increasing the awareness about the message of Trade Justice Movement and Fair Trade among the consumers and other stakeholders of development.

We would like to contribute towards evolving a wider platform which combines the efforts at the levels of policy and practice to make trade Fair at macro as well as micro levels.

This year, the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO-IFAT) has adopted 'BEAT POVERTY BEAT CLIMATE CHANGE BEAT FINANCIAL CRISIS BEAT A DRUM' as the theme World Fair Trade celebrations all over the world.

The theme enables us to build up a collective of Consumers, Fair Trade fraternity and all those to contribute in promoting sustainable production, consumption practices under one roof, so as to make an impact on national and international policies in favor of Fair Trade.

Climate Change, Financial Crisis and Fair Trade:
Climate Change and the Global Financial Recession are adding to the challenges being faced by the economically marginalized people living in developing countries.

Hence 'Fair Trade,' as a tool to extend trade justice and as a strategy to extend development opportunities to the marginalized becomes more relevant in the present times.

FTF-I envisions effort to understand long term measures required to contribute to the wider level actions clubbed with remedial measures at the grassroots-level, as important responsibility to be delivered in this regard.

A multi stakeholder approach can yield better benefits in addressing these challenges. The occasion of World Fair Trade Day 2009 can be an ideal opportunity to orient the collective efforts by various stakeholders in this regard towards a common agenda for action.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) and the National Action Plan on Climate Change can be the broad frame works for such actions.

Fair Trade Forum – India and WFTO-IFAT (The World Fair Trade Organization), the global body of Fair Trade stands for contributing to the initiatives of sustainable development through continuous efforts to address livelihood issues simultaneously with measures to protect environment.
