World 'Fair Trade Day' to be celebrated on May 10

The present actions of FTF-I and WFTO includes market facilitation, policy campaigns, consumer awareness, lobbying and capacity building to deliver Environment responsibilities as part of the 10 core standards of Fair Trade.

Now a Fair Trade management system (SFTMS-Sustainable Fair Trade Management System), aimed at ensuring the deliverance of Environment responsibilities through a Fair Trade Certification & Labeling is also getting ready under the aegis of WFTO-IFAT.

It will be a scientific tool which would contribute towards addressing the challenges of Climate Change.

Climate Change becoming the central theme of World Fair Trade Day is the logical conclusion Fair Trade Commitment to environment and mother earth.

The issue of Global Financial Crisis was also taken as the thematic area as its impacts has already started considerably affect the development prospects of the marginalized people of developing world.

The World Fair Trade 2009, will be opportunity to synergize the efforts in the development sector which can make considerable contributions to the long term efforts to address Climate change.

More sharing and close give and takes need to be realized in India between change agents in the arena of Policy & Practice. Such efforts will add more efficacy in the practice and actions related to Fair Trade based efforts of sustainable development at the grassroots.

This multi-stakeholder approach would essentially help to build up a wider network of Consumers, Environmentalists, policy experts, and government which will act us the Learned Catalysts in the day to come.

The strategies to switch into more vigilant mode of actions in context of the 'Global Financial Crisis' will also be meaningful as “Fair Trade movement” represents the ever expanding collative of 15 lakhs of marginalized producers – farmer/ artisans globally.

Hence, a set of activities, which combines, Synergizing Consultations and Appealing Campaigns are planned for one week all over India to celebrate the World Fair Trade Day 2009.

The objective of this years World Fair Trade Day celebrations can be summarized as under:-
Generating visibility as well as acceptance for the need for Responsive Actions towards addressing Climate Change and Global Financial Crisis, among consumers and all other stakeholders of development.

Programme & Venue:
We would like to organize the consultations at New Delhi as we are expecting the President of WFTO, representatives of Development Organizations, representatives of Government and some of the other leaders of the International Fair Trade movement, to take part in it.

Besides this one more public function will also be organized in New Delhi. At least one Fair Trade awareness programme will be organized in the regions on the theme of World Fair Trade Day which will be hosted by or regional coordinating organizations. The proposed activities will be as follows:-
