The Jordanian Ministry of Industry and Trade recently announced that local footwear manufacturers will not benefit from government protection beginning from February 18.
The government had protected the domestic industry by imposing import duty of JD 4.5 on leather shoes and JD 0.5-1.5 on footwear made of fabric and artificial leather.
These import duties which were imposed in February 2007 for a period of three years, were expected to gradually decline in the three year period.
These measures were expected to shield the domestic footwear industry from global competition and were also expected to develop their competencies in the period.
