Experts call for denim recycling in Bangladesh

Denim recycling, a process that turns old scrap denims into new garments, can fetch $4 billion annually, Bangladesh garment industry experts said at a recent 'Fashionology Summit' organised by the Bangladesh Apparel Exchange (BAE) in Dhaka. The 400,000 tonnes of annual leftover from garment units can be recycled for making new yarns and garments, said an expert.

As 50 litres of water are needed to wash a pair of jeans, recycling these products would save a lot of water, said Besim Ozek, strategy and business development director of Bossa.

The energy spent in recycling old materials is lesser than that spent in converting raw materials into products, said MS Hasan, director of operations in the Amber Group.

Using waste from one cycle of production to the next through remanufacturing involves practical challenges, but recycling has immense business potential in the country's garments sector, a Bangla news agency report quoted Mohiuddin Ahmed, director of Pioneer Denim, as saying.

The theme of the 2nd edition of the two-day Bangladesh Fashionology Summit was ‘Digitisation—the Next Destination’. Around 40 speakers from 15 countries attended the summit.(DS)
