Ranking of retailers for men's apparel

Unlike the women's market, the top rankers of the men's apparel retail sales ranking reveals that volume retailers take a lead.

Although Japanese men and their consciousness toward fashion is changing bit by bit, one cannot deny the large gap between the top 2 retailers, both a casual low end retailer, are far ahead of the rest of the rankers.

Aoyama Shoji, is a trade company who operate retailers like Aoyama Clothing and the Suit Company. Both of these big names are business wear retailer. Both stores are strong in suit sales regardless of the no jacket campaign with Cool Bix.

The Suit Company is popular amongst the younger generation as they have simple suits at a very reasonable price and abundant choices in size. They have started merchandising more casual wear, but their collection of business wear is by far the image most consumers have on the store.

Second in ranking is Uniqlo. Uniqlo by Fast Retailing is a retailer loved by all consumer segments but ranks highest for the men's apparel.

The company had boasted great sales in shirts this summer with their Cool Biz campaign. Their sales had increased by 70 percent in comparison to July of 2005 for their Cool Biz products.

Their main product of men's shirts came in 120 prints and sold 3 million pieces. Their low price and choices in all items is the key characteristic that makes the retailer so successful.

For boys who are in their 20's, only 5 percent shop at department stores and although men in their 30's shop at department stores, there is good competition between the volume retailers and the department stores. Another player in the apparel market is the select shops.
