Ukula, pronounced YOU-cool-a, is a four-city, two-continent, interconnected project dreamed of in 2002 by two enterprising lads from Edinburgh.

Based on the principles of sincerity, creativity and openness, Ukula is a lifestyle concept comprising of a website community, a free magazine, dj nights, a party spot featuring emerging Toronto bands such as Born Ruffians, and a store that sells one-off handbags.

Ukula also has a cafe and a music lounge. The Ukula concept was brought together by two friends in Edinburgh - Graeme Maclean and Kevin Renton to link the music, fashion and literature scenes in four cities of Toronto, Montreal, New York and London.

Ukula's objective is to provide a unique independent global network for communication and exposure. This network has expanded with last month's opening of the Ukula store on College St. which showcases local and global labels for men and women, including one-of-a-kind MilkBerlin bags from Germany.

Ukula's magazine, started two years back, is now preparing for its next quarterly issue. They have writers in four cities along with a gifted designer who helps give the paperback-sized magazine, which has a print run of 10,000, the artistic, collector's item feel they strive for.

Future expansions to the Ukula Empire include revamping the website which has 7,000 members and turning the store's basement into a gallery, using art submitted to the magazine.
