NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Stoner joined some of Australia's key fashion industry identities at the first event on the 2012 Mercedes- Benz Fashion Week Australia calendar, an all-day seminar and workshop on fashion exporting for emerging local designers.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia is the nation's biggest fashion industry event and will take place from April 30 to May 4.

“The NSW Government, through Destination NSW and NSW Trade & Investment, is a major supporter of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia and the NSW fashion industry,” Mr Stoner said.

“We're proud to position Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia as a major highlight on the NSW Events Calendar.

The inaugural Fashion Export Briefing and Cluster Workshop is a collaborative event and will provide our talented emerging designers with valuable industry insights on how to grow a successful and sustainable fashion business locally and overseas.

“It will assist our designers in taking their first export steps in highly competitive markets, such as the UK and USA, and to also start exploring emerging markets.”

“I'm very pleased to join our partners IMG, Austrade and the Council of Textile and Fashion Industries in bringing this event to our up-and-coming fashion designers.

“Fashion is an important industry for NSW, employing some 66,000 people across design, manufacturing, wholesaling and retailing, and generating sales and service income of around $7.4 billion each year.

“Thirty-seven per cent of Australia's creative industries are based in NSW, with around 150,000 people in NSW directly employed in this sector in the areas of film, music, design and fashion.

“We look forward to another vibrant, exciting and ambitious Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.”

Paula Judge from the Council of Textile and Fashion Industries (TFIA) said: “We believe this collaboration is the beginning of a framework that will create a supportive environment for our emerging talent in which they can grow and thrive, ultimately achieving greater fashion export success.

“The event aims to increase designers' understanding of 'how it is' in the real world by sharing their own experiences through clustering and learning first-hand from local and international experts such as Stephen Laundy from Fashion Compass in the UK, Jarrad Clark, Director of IMG and a Project Runway judge, and David Bush, General Manager of David Jones.”
