Art and fashion have always enjoyed a close relationship by playing muses to each other, but fashion and ballet seem to be an unlikely pair.

However, this unique combination would soon be seen and celebrated at the forthcoming New York City Ballet’s prestigious spring ballet gala for which the French fashion designer Joseph Altuzarra has designed costumes.

In collaboration with the ballet company’s costume director Marc Happel, the Paris-born designer has created ensembles for a new pas de deux (a type of duet), scheduled to be held on May 8, choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon.

Inspired from the rehearsal pictures of legendary Russian dancers Mikhail Baryshnikov and Rudolf Nureyev (1950s to 70s), Altzurra’s designs, including an off-white costume and a minimalist pale blue crepe de Chine asymmetrical dress with wrap top, will be worn by the famous American ballet principals Robert Fairchild and Tiler Peck.

Based in New York, Altzurra specializes in women’s ready-to-wear clothing lines.

In the past, many other designers like Rodarte, J. Mendel, Nanette Lepore and Valentino have designed costumes for the New York City Ballet, which is one of the foremost dance companies in the world, with an impressive roster of over 100 extraordinary dancers.
