Yuen Thai Industrial Co. Ltd. (YTI) the Japanese manufacturer and supplier of branded sports wear opened a 7,488 square meter factory at Mactan Economic Zone, its first offshore venture.

The people of this country are efficient workers. Some people believe that wages are higher in Philippines than other countries so people work harder.

Workers work harder not because of wages, but the way they are managed and consequently make the factory efficient, said Raymond Tan, Chairman, Yuen Thai Philippines Inc, (YTPI).

YTI is a joint venture of Luen Thai and Yue Yuen Industrial Holdings Limited, the world's largest footwear manufacturer.

He said the country can be made as competitive as Vietnam, Indonesia and India.

YTPI plans to manufacture 2.9 million sportswear every month for its major customer Adidas.

The goods will be distributed in the United States, Europe and Japan.

The first shipment is expected to take place on April 15.

In two to three years, he said YTPI will expand and will look for more properties to settle in.

He pointed out that his family had been involved in the textile and garments business in the country for many years.

Willie Tan, Chief Executive Officer of Luen Thai Private Group, said the firm's decision to stay in the country reflects its confidence in Philippine Government and the economy of the country.

He said that Cebu has maintained its export oriented growth and is the fastest growing cities of the nation.

Vicky Dilcock, Vice President of YTPI, congratulated the firm's highly-skilled workforce in Cebu.

YTPI hired the 700 employees who lost jobs when Elegant Garment and Simon Town International Inc., former owner of the YTPI factory, closed in November last year.

The company plans to raise employment to 1,200 between May and July 2,000, she said.
